Declaración en nombre del Presidente Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada y el Ministro de Defensa Carlos Sánchez Berzaín
Statement on Behalf of President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada
and Defense Minister Carlos Sánchez Berzaín
The events in Bolivia in 2003 were tragic for all Bolivians, including our clients. Since that time, the President and his Defense Minister have requested one thing: an independent and thorough investigation of what happened.
Today’s verdict is a step in that process, but not the final step. The trial Court did not enter a final judgment. Instead, the trial Court requested supplemental briefing on our motion for judgment as a matter of law. The briefing will be completed on May 4, 2018 and the trial Court will issue its final decision after that date.
We disagree with the jury’s verdict and believe that the proof was so lacking that the case never should have gotten to a jury. We trust the process and believe that the verdict will be overturned when the law is correctly applied.
